Full review

What it is

The Astes Engineer Max is the flagship of Astes Sports — a design collective founded by MIT and Parsons graduates ("arts, sciences and tech evolve sports") spanning Beijing, Melbourne and the Bay Area. It's a 16mm, standard-shape paddle (15.75" × 7.69") with a gritty T700 carbon face over a polypropylene honeycomb core, 7.7–8.1 oz, US$189.99.

How it plays

The reviews that exist are positive: a unique balance of power and control with exceptional spin potential from the gritty face, and an expanded sweet spot that makes it more forgiving than pure power paddles — a versatile all-court character rather than a specialist. The standard shape keeps hands quick at the cost of elongated reach. What's missing is volume: Astes has almost no Western community footprint yet, so this score leans on the small number of published reviews plus manufacturer specs, and we'll firm it up as data accumulates.

Where it fits

An intermediate all-courter who values design and wants something nobody else at open play owns — with the reassurance that the two reviewers who have tested it liked it. The risk is brand youth, not the paddle.

HK reality

SmashPoint lists Astes in Hong Kong; check current stock and price with the seller. For an unproven brand, keep the evidence limits in view and apply the SmashPoint discount only if the local route suits you.

Bottom line

Situational — genuinely promising, thinly proven. The most credible pick of the Astes range if the design-forward pitch appeals.
