What it is
The JOOLA Hyperion 3S is the Gen-3 (3S-era) version of JOOLA's Hyperion elongated — Gen-3 Honeycomb Propulsion core, Charged Carbon Surface, 16mm, ~US$220. It predates the Pro IV and Pro V Hyperions and is a control-leaning elongated in the same lineage.
How it plays
It's a solid control-elongated paddle with the touch and placement the Hyperion shape is known for, plus respectable spin off the Charged Carbon Surface. As a Gen-3 paddle it doesn't have the frame consistency of the Pro V's KineticFrame or the latest surfaces, but it's a proven, playable shape that many players got along with for a couple of seasons.
The two catches — read this
First and most important: the Hyperion 3S is UPA-A approved but not USAP approved, as the community points out, "you can play with the 3S in UPA-A tournaments but not USAP tournaments." If you play sanctioned USAP events or your league requires USAP certification, this paddle is not eligible, check before you buy. Second, JOOLA's value reputation takes a beating in the community ("Joola is probably the worst value for money on the market"), amplified by warranty and customer-service complaints and the brand's aggressive posture as the market moved to foam.
Where it fits
A budget-ish JOOLA control option now that it's a generation old, for a player who wants the Hyperion feel, doesn't need USAP certification, and finds it at a good price. If tournament eligibility matters at all, skip it for a current paddle.
Bottom line
Situational, and the USAP caveat is the deciding factor for many buyers. A proven control-elongated at a now-reduced price, but a generation behind and not USAP legal. If you want a current JOOLA control paddle, the Magnus IV or the Hyperion Pro IV; if certification and value both matter, look outside JOOLA.
What players are saying
Player feedback curated from active pickleball communities, ranked by how many other players agreed. No cherry-picking.
The 3S is UPA-A approved but not USAP approved. So you can play with the 3S in UPA-A tournaments but not USAP tournaments.
